MATTHEW DEKALB COFER
(1844- ?)


Matthew DeKalb Cofer was known as Mack. He was born in 1844 in Wilkes Co the youngest of eight children of John and Mary Williamson Cofer. John died in 1847. John and Mary had four sons, then two daughters and finally two more sons. The oldest, William, was named as executor of the will. Then came Joseph, Joshua and Thomas. The girls were Nancy, who died as a teen ager and Susannah, who lived with Mary until she died as a single lady. Claiborn was born in 1843. He died in 1862, while serving in the war stationed in Virginia. Matthew later joined the war after his 18th birthday in 1862. Matthew married Eugenia Callaway in 1867. After the second child, a daughter, Lucy Ann was born, Eugenia died. Lucy Ann married W. T. Porterfield and lived her full life in Wilkes Co. After Eugenia died, Mack then married Georgette Cofer and had four more children, Audley, Daisy, Mamie and Charles Randolph.
