Ruby and A.L. had only been married about a year when I was born, and
as I grew older everyone would tease me because I loved them so much.
They would tell me that they were mean (just teasing) and I would get so
mad at them for that. I loved going to their house for a few days. Ruby
would cook great northern beans mixed with pinto beans with strawberry
cool-aid to drink. That was like a steak to me. I loved staying with them. Then
they moved to Florida!!!! Later, because of family problems, I went and stayed
with them until I got married. They helped us a lot, A.L. was always
loaning me money in those early years when I didn't know how to make
money last until the end of the week, much less how to save money for
hard times. One time I went down to the police dept. when I knew it was
time for A.L. to be getting off work. And he saw me coming down the road
and he pulled his wallet out as he smiled at me. I loved him dearly. I
will always miss him.
I talked to Ruby every morning as I would drink my coffee. It's been almost three months and I still think about calling her almost everyday. They were two of the most influential people in my life. There will always be a void. But I know they are together now and that makes me glad.
